Transforming Movement Disorder Treatment: A New Era in Neurosurgery at Weill Cornell Medicine

At Weill Cornell Medicine, the Functional Neurosurgery Program has been at the forefront of treating complex movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and dystonia for over 25 years. With groundbreaking approaches and a commitment to innovation, the program continues to shape the future of neurological care.

In a new video highlighting the program's advancements, Dr. Michael Kaplitt, Professor and Executive Vice-Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery, provides an in-depth overview of the cutting-edge treatments available to patients. From gene therapy to focused ultrasound, the program is utilizing state-of-the-art technologies to address the root causes of movement disorders and offer life-changing therapies that weren’t available just a few years ago.

One of the most revolutionary aspects of Weill Cornell’s program is its integration of gene therapy to treat Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Dr. Kaplitt explains, “Gene therapy has been the scientific passion of my life... our work continues to push the boundaries of what's possible in treating diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. We are working on the next generation of therapies that will change the way we approach these conditions.”

The video also showcases the use of focused ultrasound, a non-invasive treatment that has been proven effective for targeting brain tissue in patients with Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor. As one of the first centers in the U.S. to offer this treatment, Weill Cornell has conducted over 500 procedures, offering patients a safer, more precise alternative to traditional brain surgery.

In addition to these cutting-edge therapies, Weill Cornell’s team is dedicated to a multidisciplinary approach in patient care, involving experts from neurosurgery, neurology, genetics, physical therapy, and more to provide the most comprehensive treatment plans.

As we observe Parkinson's Awareness Month, the video serves as a reminder of the incredible progress made in the treatment of movement disorders and the hope that continues to grow for patients worldwide.

Through continuous research, innovation, and a patient-centered approach, Weill Cornell Medicine is committed to advancing the fight against movement disorders.
