Dr. Philip Stieg, Neurosurgeon-in-Chief of NewYork-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine and director of the Weill Cornell Medicine Brain and Spine Center, has appointed Dr. Eric Elowitz as Vice Chair for Quality and Patient Safety in the Department of Neurological Surgery.
In his new role, Dr. Elowitz will oversee the quality of all neurological surgery faculty and their compliance with regulatory requirements as well as manage related administrative needs, policies, and procedures. He will advise Dr. Stieg on priorities, management, and support for quality initiatives across the department and will provide metrics on all departmental patient care activities.
Dr. Elowitz, who has been with Weill Cornell Medicine since 2010, led a departmental effort to institute a quality and outcomes database and worked on a national team to develop the first multi-center neurosurgery outcome database that established quality benchmarks. He represents Weill Cornell Medicine in the National Neurosurgery Quality and Outcomes Database (N2QOD) and leads the Surgical Site Infection Committee (SSI) to monitor and reduce incidence of operative infections. He has an active interest in clinical research relating to outcome studies of newer, minimally invasive surgical techniques and is a recognized expert in this area.
Dr. Elowitz earned his medical degree summa cum laude from SUNY/Downstate Brooklyn, where he then completed his neurosurgical residency and chief residency. He was an attending neurosurgeon at Beth Israel Medical Center and St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital before joining the faculty of Weill Cornell Medicine.
