The annual "Surgical Approaches for Craniosynostosis" course has grown rapidly in its three years, with neurosurgeons and plastic surgeons signing up to learn endoscopic and open techinques for repairing this craniofacial anomaly. A combination of lectures and hands-on sessions, the course has become an invaluable resource to surgeons and this year drew participants from across the United State as well as from Europe and South America.
A unique feature of the hands-on session is the availability of 3D-printed models of infant skulls, created by medical student Du Cheng. The models are based on actual patient scans, with each model an exact replica of an individual case of craniosynostosis. This offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity for surgeons to learn and practice their techniques on lifelike models.
Weill Cornell Medicine faculty have been leaders in endoscopic approaches to repairing craniosynostosis, making this course a valuable opportunity for others to learn endoscopic techniques. The course is held in the Surgical Innovations Laboratory, an advanced training facility with endoscopic and three-dimensional visualization capabilities.
