Saying Goodbye to Room 22: A Legacy of Innovation in Neurosurgery

Dr. Philip E. Stieg reflects on the closing of a historic OR and the promise of a new, modern space.

For decades, Room 22 at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center has been home to some of the field's most complex and pioneering neurosurgical procedures. Earlier this month, the Department of Neurological Surgery marked a historic milestone: the final case performed in this storied operating room.

“For years, Room 22 allowed us to be at the cutting edge in the surgical management of cerebrovascular disease,” said Dr. Philip E. Stieg, professor and chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine. “It’s been integral to our department’s growth and success.”

Dr. Stieg’s final case in Room 22 was especially meaningful. He performed it alongside two department residents, Dr. Alexandra Giantini-Larsen and Dr. Rafael Uribe.

“I’ve known Alexandra since she rotated with me as a high school student and have had the privilege of mentoring her throughout her training,” said Dr. Stieg. “Rafael has been with us for 10 years—he feels like family. Sharing this moment with them was incredibly special.”

Over the years, Room 22 witnessed both surgical excellence and high-stakes moments. Dr. Stieg recalled one particularly unforgettable case: “We had an accidental injury to a patient’s carotid artery during surgery, but we were able to repair it endovascularly, saving the patient’s life.”

While Room 22's closing marks the end of an era, Dr. Stieg is excited about the possibilities the renovated space will bring.

“We’re gaining better operational organization, more space, and an improved physical layout that will enhance workflow and safety,” he said. “The new technology and lighting will further elevate our ability to deliver exceptional care.”

Dr. Stieg extended his gratitude to the NewYork-Presbyterian leadership and facilities team for their efforts in bringing the renovation to life. “Thank you,” he said. He also acknowledged the contributions of Lucille Ostensen, Dr. Maria Bustillo, Dr. Jared Knopman, the design team and the facilities manager.

For Dr. Stieg, the newly renovated operating room is more than an upgrade. It reflects the department’s broader mission. “This renovation embodies our commitment to world-class patient care, technological advancement, premier education for residents and fellows, and innovative treatment for cerebral and spinal vascular disease, including stroke.”

As the department transitions into a new chapter, Room 22's legacy lives on in the lives saved, the surgeons trained, and the continued pursuit of excellence in neurosurgery.
