Dr. Babacar Cisse was a featured speaker at the Neurosurgeon Research Career Development Program (NRCDP) Retreat at the Lodges in Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah, on October 26, 2019. His presentation, Transcriptional Regulation of the Development and Function of Microglia in Health and Disease, was an examination of how the CNS immune cells called microglia perform their functions in normal brains and in brain tumors.
Dr. Cisse, Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery in the Weill Cornell Medicine Brain and Spine Center, is an NINDS/CNS Getch Scholar and Leon Levy Research Fellow. He is the principle investigator of a basic research laboratory where the primary focus is on the interactions between the immune system and brain tumors. His long-term goal is to develop a thorough understanding of how brain tumors develop and grow.
The NRCDP Retreat is an annual opportunity for junior faculty to interact directly with senior neurosurgery faculty, NRCDP national advisory committee members, other neuroscientists, and NIH/NINDS career development leaders in a small-group format. Attendees network and connect for individual mentoring and career development advice.
The NRCDP is committed to supporting women and other underrepresented groups to increase the diversity of the neurosurgeon-research workforce. It is committed to developing the careers and providing a support system for junior neurosurgeons across the country.
