The 12th Annual New York City Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Symposium (NYC-MISS 2019) was held on December 14-16, 2018. Participants attended two days of lectures and case studies, followed by a hands-on cadaver lab session where they learned practiced the most advanced techniques for minimally invasive spine surgery. This year’s course featured the widest array to date of leading-edge equipment for advanced techniques, including robotic surgery.
Highlights of the symposium included a “Socratic Battle” between Dr. Juan Uribe and Dr. Sigurd Berven on the comparative benefits of MIS versus open surgery, a demonstration of Indirect Decompression via Transpsoas Approach and Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion with Dr. Luiz Pimenta, a demonstration of the MIS Decompression for Lumbar Stenosis by Dr. Roger Härtl, and the lab session, which featured 10 cadaver workstations featuring the newest MIS technologies.
The debate among spine surgeons includes questions about how surgeons select the correct procedure for the patient, whether minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and navigation should prevail over standard operative procedures for the treatment of spinal disorders, and how best to weigh the pros and cons?
Many surgeons currently do not have the expertise or technical knowledge to inform this decision-making process, which requires a comprehensive understanding of the new and less invasive techniques (with and without stereotactic navigation) for the operative treatment of spinal disorders, particularly an understanding of the skills essential in selecting appropriate patients for MIS surgery.
Through lectures, panel discussions, and case studies covering the most current techniques (microdiscectomy/laminectomy using tubular access, minimally invasive TLIF, transpsoas approach), pros/cons of MIS, complex case reviews, and a look at the future of MIS, this annual course provides surgeons with a better understanding of available procedures and criteria for appropriate patient selection. See the agenda below, and save the dates for this year’s course (December 12-14, 2019).
