Dr. Roger Härtl and his team conducted the 2023 Global Neurosurgery Course in Tanzania in March, spending time on intensive classroom learning as well as providing hands-on training in the operating room. This year’s course was the largest to date, featuring:
- 76 international faculty members, including providers from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Turkey, Malaysia, Pakistan, the United States, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, and Canada. This remarkable team allows us to share best practices in surgical and bedside care from around the world.
- 122 participants, with students attending from Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, Egypt, and Malawi. These participants bring their newfound skills back to their local hospitals, amplifying the training our team provides.

Highlights of this year’s course include:
- Use of virtual reality (VR) for teaching surgical cases and screw placement (provided by Non Nocere)
- Training on advanced surgical simulators (provided by UpSurgeOn)
- First 3D-guided TLIF (fusion) procedures done in sub-Saharan Africa (navigation system donated by Brainlab)
- First cases performed in sub-Saharan Africa using advanced intra-operative monitoring (IOM system donated by Caldwell)
- Multiple trauma surgeries performed using implants, for a study to show effectiveness of these surgeries (implants donated by DePuy Synthes)
- Innovative tubular surgeries performed to teach minimal-access approaches (tubular equipment and camera donated by Viseon)
