James Niemeyer, PhD

Instructor

Dr. James Niemeyer, an instructor in Neurological Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine, brings a network-based approach to one of the brain’s most complex conditions: epilepsy. With a PhD in Neuroscience from Brown University and a bachelor’s degree from UC Santa Cruz, Dr. Niemeyer combines cutting-edge techniques, including calcium imaging, electrophysiology, and neurostimulation, to explore how different cell types and brain regions communicate during seizures.

His research focuses on identifying novel treatment targets, especially those that can be addressed through network-oriented neurostimulation. Dr. Niemeyer aims to develop more precise interventions for seizure disorders by mapping the intricate web of brain activity. He also works closely with genetic researchers to understand how inherited mutations disrupt brain function, a key step in decoding the root causes of not only epilepsy but a wide range of neurological diseases. Through this work, Dr. Niemeyer is helping to advance a deeper, more holistic understanding of brain health.
