Dr. Brenton Pennicooke, a fourth-year neurosurgery resident, has been awarded a 2016 Charlie Kuntz Scholar Award by the Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). This prestigious award is given each year to neurosurgical residents or fellows for outstanding research on spinal disorders.
Dr. Pennicooke collaborated with spine fellow Dr. Yu Moriguchi and Dr. Roger Hartl’s spine research team on this work, titled “Annular repair using high-density collagen gel seeded with fibrochondrocytes in a rat model.” The team’s groundbreaking work with collagen gel for disc repair has won several major awards and holds promise for revolutionary new treatment for degenerative disc disease.
