Many children experience neuromotor issues — meaning walking, balancing, and movement. The NeuroMotor Disorders Program at Weill Cornell Medicine Neurological Surgery brings together a multidisciplinary team of specialists who have been trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of these movement disorders in children and adolescents.
We evaluate children with any movement disorder, but we commonly see children with cerebral palsy, dystonia, traumatic brain injury, stroke, tumors, and similar conditions. Many children with known diagnoses come to us in search of alternative options for care; others are misdiagnosed and therefore have not been treated effectively. Some parents and physicians may not know what options even exist.
Because the specialists in the Neuromotor Disorders Program come from different specialties, we have the ability to look at a child’s issue from multiple perspectives. Our strategy is to identify exactly what’s limiting the child’s movement and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Our first line of treatment is always non-surgical — our collaborative approach means that we’ll always exhaust all non-invasive options before we discuss surgical intervention.
If a child does require surgery, our program offers the combined resources of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and the Hospital for Special Surgery to ensure the child receives the best possible care.
