Any infant diagnosed with vein of Galen malformation during pregnancy or at birth, or any child suspected of having the condition, should be evaluated by an experienced neurosurgeon with expertise in pediatric neurosurgery and cerebrovascular surgery. The neurosurgeon will conduct an evaluation and make a recommendation on a course of treatment tailored specifically to each patient.
Even within the specialty of neurosurgery there are sub-specialists who have particular expertise in cerebrovascular conditions like vein of Galen malformation, or who have many years of experience in the treatment of arteriovenous malformations. Dr. Jeffrey Greenfield is Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery in Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medical College and a pediatric neurosurgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Y. Pierre Gobin, Director of Interventional Neuroradiology at the Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center, is an internationally recognized expert with 20 years of experience in the treatment of vascular diseases of the brain and spine. A pioneer in endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms, Dr. Gobin was one of the inventors of the MERCI Concentric Retriever that is used in removing blood clots and other obstructions. He has developed and established minimally invasive surgical approaches to treating acute stroke and has particular expertise in arterial stenting and other treatments for cerebrovascular disorders. Jared Knopman, M.D., specializes in the treatment of vascular diseases of the brain and spine and has dual expertise in both open neurosurgical and minimally invasive interventional techniques. Dr. Knopman has done specialized fellowship training in endovascular neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology at Weill Cornell Medical College and has surgical and interventional expertise in treating a diverse array of diseases of the brain and spine. Dr. Srikanth Boddu is an interventional neuroradiologist who specializes in minimally invasive endovascular treatments for cerebrovascular and spinal disorders. In addition to vein of Galen malformations, Dr. Boddu’s specialties include aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, tumors, stroke, pseudotumor cerebri, and tinnitus.
