Dr. Michael Apuzzo is an iconic name in the history of neurosurgery, and the Weill Cornell Medicine Brain and Spine Center is honored to count him among its faculty. Starting next year, his name will also be associated with a new class of medical students at the BAU Medical School of Bahcesehir University in Istanbul, Turkey.
The BAU Medical School partners with Medicalpark, Turkey’s largest hospital network, in training the next generation of physicians in that country. As a way to motivate and inspire students, they name each year’s class after a different famed doctor: The Class of 2022 is the Stiles Class, after Dr. Charles Stiles, Professor of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School and Co-Chair of Cancer Biology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute; the Class of 2023 is the Martin Class, after Dr. Joseph Martin, Professor Emeritus of Neurobiology at Harvard and former Dean of the Harvard Faculty of Medicine; and the Class of 2020 is the Black Class, named for famed neurosurgeon Dr. Peter Black. In honor of Dr. Apuzzo, the BAU Class of 2025 will be named the Professor Michael Apuzzo Class. Dr. Apuzzo will travel to Istanbul in September 2019 to welcome the incoming Apuzzo Class.
The Bahcesehir University School of Medicine Board of Advisors has also selected Dr. Apuzzo to receive the Bahcesehir University Medal of Science in recognition of his contributions to neurosurgery. Previous recipients of the Medal of Science include Dr. Martin and Dr. Black as well as Dr. Afksendiyos Kalangos of Geneva University, Dr. M. Necmettin Pamir of Acıbadem University, Dr. James Rutka of Toronto University, and Dr. Theo Seiler of the University of Zurich.
“I cannot imagine a better motivation for my students than the drive to live up to Dr. Apuzzo’s honorable name,” says Prof. Türker Kılıç, Dean of the BAU School of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery there.
