Dr. Antonio Bernardo has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for his remarkable achievements in the field of neurosurgery and the neurosciences. This knighthood is the highest ranking honor in Italy, awarded for merit in the fields of literature, the arts, economy, public service, or social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities. Dr. Bernardo’ investiture took place at the Italian Consulate in New York on June 2, 2017 – the anniversary of the founding of the Italian Republic.
Dr. Bernardo has a long and distinguished career as a neurosurgeon. He directs the Surgical Innovations Laboratory for Skull Base Microneurosurgery at the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, where his courses attract an international following of neurosurgeons and fellows interested in training on the advanced equipment the lab has to offer. Dr. Bernardo pioneered the use of 3-D technology in neurosurgery, and the Surgical Innovations Lab is a state-of-the-art facility that combines cadaveric dissection, virtual reality, and computer simulations to develop visuospatial skills in the neurosurgeons who train there. Dr Bernardo also serves as neurosurgical consultant in many countries where he performs complex skull base surgical cases.
The award was presented by the Honorable Francesco Genuardi, Consul General of Italy in New York, and by Deputy Consuls General Roberto Frangione, Isabella Periotto, and Chiara Saulle.
